A recent survey conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) reveals that in spite of a robust demand for MBAs, 90 % MBA graduates in India are unemployable at present. Barring graduates from IIMs, the campus placements in the b-schools has gone down by 40 per cent since 2009.

It is not just about the b-schools even the recruitments at the campus in engineering colleges also have gone down by 40 per cent since 2009, as revealed by the Assocham paper on ‘b-schools and Engineering colleges shut down- Big Business’.

Consequently, the b-schools and engineering colleges fail to attract students. In fact more than 180 b-schools have already closed down in 2012 in the major cities Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Dehradun, while another 160 are struggling for their survivals.

Some of the few reasons placements in the b-schools have gone down

• No quality control
• Poor infrastructure
• Faculty not good enough
• The placements not commensurate with fees being charged
• Burgeoning of tier-2 and tier-3 management education institutes providing poor quality management education that does not meet the needs of corporate world.
• Lack of practical skills required by the corporate sector today

In spite of investing time and money both, students are not getting much from their MBA degrees or diplomas as they fail to bridge the gap between the education and the industry demands. Companies don’t require your MBA grades if you fail to help them in developing their business, increase their leads, sales and profits. They need the practical knowledge.

Talking about career let’s see what’s hot in the market this year.

Top three jobs to look out for in 2014

Civil Engineers

The economy of India is supposed to pick up after the union elections in the country that will lead to a surge in real estate demands and that demands for civil engineers will continue to be high.

Specialized Doctors

The Medical segment is growing at an exponential rate and there will be the shortage of doctors in the country as the demand from both rural and urban India will remain high.

Digital Marketing

Things have changed a lot in last few years when it comes to the market and its demands while the education that is being delivered has not seen much change. Marketing now is getting transformed to digital and digital marketing is going to be the future of marketing while still there is the dearth of skilled professional who are proficient in digital marketing. Simple MBA is not going to work; the candidates have to have a holistic knowledge and exposure of digital marketing.

Besides, India is expected to have 243 million Internet users by June 2014, which signals for a more exponential growth of digital marketing in the country. More the people on internet more will be the optimizations of various online marketing channels, more will be the resource requirement, more will be the jobs and hence more will be the recruitment.
