Our previous report published on the 24th of September this year talked about how and why India is expected to surpass the United States to become the second largest smartphone market by 2019 and in this report we will talk about how more and more consumers are migrating from basic phones to Android phones in the country.

A recent report released by Opera Software called ‘Opera Software’s State of the Android Mobile Web report’ revealed that with the user base growing by 120% in the past year India has become the fastest growing Smartphone market in the world. Besides, number of Android phones grew by 160%. As per the report, although for the first time but the Opera Mini browser was used more on smartphones than feature phones, which hints that feature phone users are upgrading to smartphone at a fast pace. And, it has made India to have the largest number of Opera Mini users in the world.

Some most obvious facts and stats:

• The sub-Rs 10,000 phones formed 77% of Opera’s users in India, with the sub-Rs 5,000 phone category growing fast.
• With 30% Micromax phones forms a bulk of Opera users in India, while Samsung followed with 25%.
• Samsung users consume 56% of data on the top 100 Android devices and take all the top 10 positions in Android handsets used by Opera Mini users as well. However, Micromax users consume only 21% of data.

What engages Indian Mobile users on the web?

• Facebook spots the top position with seven out of every ten web pages viewed by Opera Mini users.
• Shopping portals witnessed 365% growth in the last year as mobile users flocked e-tailers.
• Flipkart followed by Snapdeal and Myntra led with the most time spent per user.
• A number of Indian users were also found looking at online classifieds, which is a segment that jumped by 150%.
• Although, Quikr has came out as a clear market leader with a year-on-year growth of 243.5% and Olx is now second with a 120.7% rise in views but users spent the most time on OLX.
• Although a large part of Indian users are now accessing education and job portals, as well as blogs, still video has become the king of the ring, growing by 205% since 2013.
• Followed by Dailymotion and Metacafe, YouTube tops the chart when it comes to videos.

Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia at Opera Software, said it is likely that the smartphone growth in India is powered by aggressively priced smartphones by Indian OEMs.

“Currently, we have partnerships with 16 Indian OEMs who have preinstalled Opera Mini on over 350 models of Android devices. Opera Mini’s unique data compression technology, which lets users browse faster, make it a great fit for Indian handsets,”

he said in a release.
