Several people have changed their Facebook profile pictures after CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Prime Minister Narendra Modi did so and urged other to follow suit to support the Digital India initiative.

Earlier 18 lacs jobs were announced through digital India campaign in July & now moving forward with Digital India, the government is trying to create the infrastructure for people in India – urban or rural- and connect 2, 50,000 villages with broadband optical connectivity. The government is trying to bring the infrastructure connectivity environment in each and every village, alongside trying to ensure e-governance, IT skills and eventually Make in India.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1, 2015, the Digital India initiative was started with a view to empower the people of the country digitally. The initiative also aims to bridge India’s digital segment and bring big investments in the technology sector.

The Digital India initiative seeks to lay emphasis on e-governance and transform India into a digitally empowered society.

The program is projected at Rs 1, 13,000 crore which will prepare the country for knowledge-based transformation.

Impact of Digital India by 2019:

• Broadband in 2.5 lakh villages, universal phone connectivity

• Net Zero Imports by 2020

• 400,000 Public Internet Access Points

• Wi-Fi in 2.5 lakh schools, all universities; Public Wi-Fi hotspots for citizens

• Digital Inclusion: 1.7 Cr trained for IT, Telecom and Electronics Jobs

• Job creation: Direct 1.7 Cr. and Indirect at least 8.5 Cr.

• E-Governance&eservices: Across government

• India to be leader in IT use in services – health, education, banking

• Digitally empowered citizens – public cloud, internet access

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella plans to become India’s partner in the Digital India program. He said that his company will set up low cost broadband technology services to 5 lakh villages across the country.

Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google said that India will play a big part in driving technology forward in future which will improve people’s lives in India.“We are expanding our public Wi-Fi hotspots. Teaming up with Google, we will cover 500 railway stations in a short time”.

In an effort to push Digital India initiative, chipmaker Qualcomm said it will invest $150 million for Indian startups in the mobile and internet of everything (IoE) ecosystem.
