YouTube recently disclosed information that it is shutting down Video Editor (youtube.com/editor) and Photo slideshows services w.e.f. from September 20th, 2017. The message has been given by YouTube’s Community Manager, Marissa through a post in the YouTube help forum.

Advertisers using the editor will be able to edit and finalize work until said date, i.e. they have 2 months to finalize any video projects before the features get turned off completely.

Services going away on September 20, 2017:
  • The tool specifically at the destination com/editor (raw video clip editing)
  • The Photo slideshow tool

Already published videos edited with the editor will not get affected and there would be left only “Enhancements feature” in the Video Manager allowing users to do minor adjustments like adding filters, blurring or trimming clips.

Other things that aren’t going away in ‘Enhancements’:
  • Trimming
  • Blurring
  • Audio Library
  • Filters
  • End Screens
  • Cards
  • Subtitles
  • Sound effects
  • Quick fixes (stabilize, contrast, slow motion, saturation, etc)

As publishing reason towards the step, YouTube said that, “We’ve seen limited usage of these features, so we’re retiring them to focus our efforts on building new tools and improving on other existing features.”

Users can download their videos from YouTube in 720p or use Google Takeout to retrieve their original files, in case looking to remix uploaded videos into a new video. There are also several free and paid third-party editing tools available for users looking for new editing software.
